ABOUT

General psychiatrist Dr. John Torline works within the biopsychosocial paradigm and utilises evidence-based psychiatry. He is situated in Cape Town.

Dr Torline is based at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital. His primary focus is providing outpatient care for adults (18 to 60 years). Patients requiring inpatient psychiatric care are admitted to Life St Vincent's Clinic. Dr Torline obtained his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and then qualified in Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town. After completing his specialist training, he briefly worked in a Maternal Mental Health Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital. His work has also included research at UCT and monthly consultations at the Groote Schuur Transgender Clinic.

Before training as a medical doctor, Dr Torline worked in the complementary health space for several years. Though he no longer practices complementary medicine, he has retained its holistic approach. Dr Torline aims to provide individualised, compassionate, person-centred care, which combines medical assessment, lifestyle advice, psychotherapy, and the careful use of psychiatric medication.

Dr Torline is an Honorary Lecturer at UCT's Department of Mental Health and Psychiatry, where he is involved in training and supervision of research. Dr Torline is a founding member of PATHSA, an interdisciplinary health professional organisation that promotes the health, well-being and self-actualisation of trans and gender-diverse people.
